RECORD EDITION OF OLIO CAPITALE TRIESTE CLOSES
5149 visitors, 230 exhibitors, 262 oils in competition, 135 journalists, 1007 business meetings.

Trieste, 9 March 2009 – The curtains have come down on the third, record edition of Olio Capitale – Salone of typical and quality extravirgin olive oils, the specialist trade fair organised by Fiera Trieste in collaboration with the Città dell’Olio (Cities of Oil) Association and with valuable contributions from the Province of Trieste and the municipalities of Trieste, San Dorligo and Muggia. The edition this year will be remembered for its record numbers: 5149 visitors, 230 exhibitors, 262 oils in competition, 1007 business meetings organised with 30 buyers from 12 countries, 4600 sq.m of exhibition area, 135 accredited journalists, 20,000 glasses used in the tasting sessions and 180 kg of apples consumed between individual tastings, 33 parallel events such as talk shows and courses, 482 people working at the stands (excluding local exhibitor staff from Trieste) who worked at the Fiera and stayed in the city’s hotels.

The numbers speak for themselves, and are a clear indication of the success of this specialist fair, which, like Trieste Espresso Expo, has now earned itself recognition as the reference point for this commercial sector. The event’s goals of elevating the culture of olive oil among both visitors - who have been able to taste and buy some of the best extravirgin oils in production – and restaurateurs and caterers, through topical courses and guided tasting sessions, ensuring contact with the markets through the business meetings, have been met in full. Olio Capitale is the only high-level specialist trade fair in Italy for extravirgin olive oil, and is an invaluable asset for the city and Region. Activity from the network of related services in the territory, in economic terms, has also been notable, considering the 482 exhibitors from outside the local area who have slept, eaten and travelled within the city. The event and the surrounding territory have been promoted through communications and press releases throughout the country and abroad. Fiera Trieste truly believes in what it is doing, and extends its thanks to all who have contributed to this success.”
WINNERS OF THE 3RD OLIO CAPITALE COMPETITION. SURPRISE RESULTS FOR SPAIN:
There have been surprise results at the 3rd Olio Capitale competition this time. Spain has always shone in earlier editions, arriving in the short list of finalists, but this time won the fruttato medio (medium intensity) category. As mentioned before, the short lists are drawn up by the University of Bologna, whose tasting panels from the Department of Food Science make selection of the samples according to strict and rigorous criteria. Once again there has been excellent performance by the entries from Sicily, which as before dominated the scene, with seven extravirgin oil finalists out of a total of fifteen.
Following the innovative idea proposed by the scientific editorial staff from "Teatro Naturale" - a weekly magazine dedicated to the agrofood industry, in particular olive oil – the olive oils are judged by three panels - a group of professional tasters; a group of restaurateurs; and also a public panel made up expressly of consumers. This approach has been hugely successful, since it ensures a good balance of groups representing the various approaches and trends.

Azienda Agricola (agro-enterprise) Valentino Eleonora, from Mineo (CT, Italy), winner of the 3rd Olio Capitale competition in the fruttato leggero (light intensity) category, was participating for the first time in the Trieste Salone of typical and quality extravirgin olive oils, and among the best in the olive production competition in this its first appearance. This enterprise, which uses the olive mill at Cutrera di Chiaramente Gigli (RG), intends to create its own product line of bottled olive oil. For enterprise Valentino Eleonora, participation in Olio Capitale has been a debut at highest level on the olive oil panorama, both in Italy and abroad.
